Important Pointers for Port Forwarding to be Successful
Last Updated 7 months ago

Scenario
You are trying to configure Device to be accessible through the internet vie Port Forwarding on Router.

1. Device have to be on the same subnet as Router.
This means that the the first 3 group of IP address have to be the same.
e.g. Router is 192.168.1.254. Device's IP have to be 192.168.1.XXX.

2. Device have to be configured or assigned with a unique IP address on the subnet.
If you are using DHCP settings on the Device, the Router will automatically assigned a free IP address within the same subnet to the Device. To ensure that the same IP is always assigned to the Device, you may want to use the DHCP Reservation settings (if present, and can be called other names by different router's manufacturer) to always assign the same IP to the Device vie it's MAC Address.
Otherwise, ensure that the IP address you configured for the Device is not being used by other devices.
3. Know your Device IP.
Know what IP is configured for your Device or being assigned to the Device.
You can either use the Device manufacturer detection tools (if manufacturer provide), or refer to the the Router's DHCP assignment IPs and references it with the Device MAC address.

4. Make sure Device's Gateway IP is the same as Router's IP.
Make sure that the Device's Gateway IP is set to the Router's IP, e.g. 192.168.1.254

5. Port Forwarding
Forward the various ports required to your Device IP.

6. Router Restart Some router's require a restart to activate the new settings after Port Forwarding Configuration. Consult your router's manual.

7. Multiple Routers
If you have multiple routers connected within your network, you will either need to connect your Device to the router that's connected directly to the internet, or you'll need to configured port forwarding on the multiple routers to route the traffic to the device properly.
