Pro and Cons of using HIK-CONNECT method vs Direct Domain/IP
Last Updated 14 days ago
Understanding the Terminology
There is often confusion between Hik-Connect for End Users and the Hik-Connect Platform.
- Hik-Connect for End Users
The mobile app/software used by users to view and manage their CCTV system. - Hik-Connect Platform
Hikvision’s cloud-based P2P (peer-to-peer) service that connects the CCTV system to the app through Hikvision’s servers.
Even when using Direct Domain or Direct IP, the same Hik-Connect App may still be used. The difference lies in how the connection is established, not the app itself.
Hik-Connect Platform (Cloud P2P Access)
This method relies on Hikvision’s cloud servers to relay the connection between the user’s device and the CCTV system.Advantages
- No configuration required on the internet router
- Remote live view and playback without router setup
- Works even when no public IP is available (e.g. CGNAT, mobile broadband)
Limitations
- Limited set of functionality compared to direct access
- Traffic may be routed through the manufacturer’s servers, which can result in slower speeds and higher latency
- Limited troubleshooting capability, as the servers are hosted and managed by the manufacturer
- Viewing sessions are limited to approximately 5 minutes and require manual reconnection
- Limited backup and download capability for recorded footage
(e.g. Hikvision Remote Backup software does not work via Hik-Connect connections) - No browser-based access; access is restricted to the manufacturer’s app or software
Direct Domain / Direct IP Access (Non-P2P)
This method connects directly to the CCTV system using a static public IP, DDNS, or a custom domain, with port forwarding configured on the internet router.
Although initial setup is more complex, this method provides:- Full system functionality
- Faster and more stable connection performance
- Greater visibility for troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Support for browser access and advanced software tools
Summary
Hik-Connect Platform prioritizes ease of use and minimal setup, while Direct Domain / IP prioritizes performance, control, and full system access. The most suitable method depends on whether simplicity or full functionality is the higher priority for the site.
