How to fix Hikvision “the device is locked” issue
Last Updated 3 years ago

The error message “the device is locked” while attempting to access your HIKVISION CCTV System remotely via your iVMS-4500/iVMS-4200/Internet browser app, is an indication that there were at least 5 failed incorrect password attempts.

Someone had tried to access your system remotely with the wrong password for at least 5 times.

As a precaution, the DVR will lock the device for 30 minutes. This means no remote access is possible during this time. Only local access (at the actual recorder) will be possible. If local access is not possible, the only option is to wait until the lockout is over.

Alternatively, you can also reboot the DVR. It'll reset the lock out.

There are various reasons why the device is getting lock here's a few of them.
1. You had entered the wrong password when changing mobile phone. The mobile phone made multiple wrong logins and lock up the system. Ensure that the passwords are entered correctly.

2. You had changed the password on the DVR without updating the password on your mobile phone. Ensure that the password on all mobile phones with access to the system are updated when you change password on the DVR. Note that the existing QR Code use to import the settings will be invalid whenever the password is changed. You'll need to regenerate a new QR Code.

3. Network issues between the phone and the DVR causing wrong logins. In a few cases, there are network issues between your phone and the recorder and the device is not recognizing the password, even if the phone app is using the correct password. Try restarting the phone or delete the settings from the iVMS-4500 and readd in again.

4. However the attempts might not be made by a real person. It could be due to bots/softwares running on internet that randomly scan and detected IPs and ports of various system on the internet and attempts to login to the system. These bots/software made constant thousands of attempts to login to the systems using various users/passwords combinations. If the attack is ongoing, waiting out the 30 mins/rebooting the DVR might not work as there are constant wrong login attempts on the systems that may last for hours.

In this case, you might try to force a IP changed on your internet router (For users on Dynamic Plans). You can try renewing the Public/WAN IP lease on your internet router, or switch off your internet router and ONT (fibre) for 5 mins, then turn it back on.

When the IP changed, the attackers will still be attempting the logins on the old IP. The new IP assigned to you will not be known to the attackers and you should be able to login.

Otherwise if the attempts are made constantly, you might need to reconfigure the ports used for the CCTV system to another port to thaw the hacking attempts.
